ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

TODD HIDO’S SUBURBIA: Eight dreamy photographs of homes, interiors, and the roads that surround them are on view through July 5 at Palm Springs Art Museum. Largely drawn from the series House Hunting, Hido’s domestic landscapes are at once familiar and unsettling, bringing a cinematic ethereality to his vernacular subjects. Info

TWO FOR THE SHOW: In Conversation: Alma Allen and J.B. Blunk blurs the line between design and sculpture, with both men creating evocative organic work from natural materials. The exhibition continues through July 9 at Palm Springs Art Museum’s Architecture and Design Center. Info

 

CULINARY

RESTAURANT WEEK: Greater Palm Springs Restaurant Week (June 1-17) features a valley of restaurants offering special menus at set prices, with lunches available for $15, $20 or $25 and dinners for $29, $39 or $49. Info

 

HERITAGE

WESTERN STORIES: Drawing from Palm Springs Art Museum’s permanent collection and important loans, the exhibition Western Stories (through June 18) looks to the complex relationships between landscape and the body in the art of the American West and Mexico. Info

NATIVE AMERICAN BASKETRY: Palm Springs Art Museum’s exhibition Grass Roots: Native American Basketry of the West, through June 18, presents the elegance and simplicity of centuries-old utilitarian forms alongside the eye-dazzling intricate designs created by master weavers of the early twentieth century. Info

AVIATION ART: Palm Springs Air Museum presents the 32nd International Aviation Art and Aerospace Exhibition (through July 31) featuring works by more than 25 artists from around the world. Info

 

MUSIC & STAGE

OPEN MIC: Want to showcase your talent? Raices Cultura hosts the perfect platform June 1 in Coachella. All performers welcome. Info

MUSIC ALL SUMMER: CV Rep, located at the Atrium in Rancho Mirage, begins three summer music series: Classical (June 7, Michael Noble, pianist), Jazz (June 12, Marshall Hawkins), and Cabaret (June 22-23, Scott Dreier: The Doris Day Project).

ANDY WEIR SPEAKS: Palm Springs Speaks presents Andy Weir, author of The Martian and Artemis, June 7 at Palm Springs Cultural Center. He’ll discuss his lifelong interest in space, relativistic physics, orbital mechanics, and the history of manned spaceflight. Info

SPLASH HOUSE: Poolside jams from Duke Dumont, summer night action from ZHU’s Blacklizt brand, and heavy bass on the booty from What So Not lead the lineup for Splash House, June 8-10, at three resort properties in Palm Springs. Info

TRUST TOGETHER: Harrison House Outdoor Stage in Joshua Tree hosts a performance and book signing June 9 uniting music from Trust And The High Wire, a CD by Myshkin Warbler, and stories from Held Together, a book by Jenny Q. Info

THE PRODUCERS: Join the Filmmakers’ Gallery on June 9 at Palm Springs Cultural Center for The Producers: The Musical with special guest and Tony award winner Gary Beach. The event includes a cocktail reception, conversation with Gary Beach, and a screening of The Producers based on the hit Broadway musical by Mel Brooks. Info

THE 39 STEPS: This ingenious comic stage adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s suspenseful thriller turns a cast of four actors into more than 150 zany characters with a mix of melodrama, action and lots of quick-change costuming. The production runs June 22-July 1 at Indio Performing Arts Center. Info

 

FILM

SHORT FEST: Palm Springs International Short Film Festival & Film Market rolls June 19-25 with about 330 films from more than 60 countries, as well as panel discussions covering a range of trends and practices in global film. Info

YEAH, BABY!: The ARRIVE hotel presents its Dive-in Movie Series on June 29 with a screening of the hilarious Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. Come for a flick, a dip and a drink. The event is free and open to everybody (21 and older). Movie starts at 8 p.m. (sunset). Arrive early to grab a seat or a float in the pool. Info

 

VISUAL ART

ART WALK: The galleries of the Backstreet Art District in Palm Springs welcome guests to see their latest exhibitions and interact with the artists on June 6. Info

DESERT PHOTOGRAPHY: Journey Through the Desert – The Road Less Traveled, a survey of photography from early 20th century to today, continues through November 25 at Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert. Info
