Linda Pack painted Whitewater from a photograph during the COVID-19 stay-at-home order.

La Quinta–based artist Linda Pack photographed this scene along her hiking path at Whitewater Preserve. She wanted to return to capture more inspiration, but instead she stayed safe at home and painted Whitewater (shown above), a 3-by-4-foot acrylic on canvas, and earned a $500 to Keep Art Alive — a grant from the California Desert Arts Council (CDAC) offering relief to working visual and performing artists whose livelihood has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pack, a former attorney, mediator, and judge, once owned and operated a studio where aspiring artists came to learn, paint, sculpt, and throw clay. She continues to teach privately. In her own practice, she likes to experiment with different techniques but generally prefers painting using acrylics.

CDAC and affiliate La Quinta Arts Foundation established a $50,000 Keep Art Alive fund to award grants to Coachella Valley artists and arts organizations who create thoughtful, inspiring, and relevant works responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Whitewater, her love of color and movement animates the canvas from the earthy boulders in the foreground to the dramatic mountains and azure sky on the opposite end of the trail.
